Joint Collaboration in Medical Micro Engineering

Micro-XL is a joint commercial and technical venture between two of Europe’s leading high precision components manufacturers… Precision Micro and XL Precision Technologies.

The collaboration has been stimulated by customer requests to have a single point of contact for projects in which both companies are involved in order to simplify communication and the overall commercial process. It also brings to the medical engineering market a variety of “non-conventional” manufacturing technologies which when employed individually or in combination, can provide new high precision solutions in micro and nano size ranges, for medical equipment manufacturers and medical practitioners alike.

From prototypes to full volume instrument requirements, the venture has the design expertise and manufacturing technologies to provide practical, bespoke solutions to a wide range of customer requirements from instruments to implantables.

The primary strength of the venture is the in-depth medical engineering knowledge of the Micro-XL field based engineers. Based in Europe and the US, they have extensive knowledge of the industry and are able to work directly with surgeons and other end users in order to develop concepts into products that really do solve problems.

A further Micro-XL strength is the wide range of in-house manufacturing technologies it has available… all technologies that provide process consistency from prototypes through to volume production.

“The Micro-XL venture brings together two, complementary, world-class manufacturing capabilities,” said Tom Graham, Managing Director of XL Precision Technologies. “It is an extension of an already successful relationship in Europe, encouraged by our global and US based customers.”

Production technologies offered include: Micro EDM, Micro Laser, Laser Evolved Etching Process (LEEP), Laser Evolved ElectroForming (LEEF) and Micro-welding; complementary processes that used individually or in combination to achieve best value for the customer.

“The Micro-XL collaboration not only focuses our wealth of experience in the medical market but also reduces cost for the customer,” said Anthony Marrett, MD of Precision Micro. “The customer has a single point of contact, a single supplier and we have experienced engineers versed in designing to the strengths of our manufacturing technologies in order to utilize the most economical process routes.”

Both companies have a history of problem solving, accepting challenges, pushing the boundaries of their manufacturing capabilities while building technology supply partnerships in the OEM medical market. The synergies available to Micro-XL can only enhance their effectiveness.
